HDTV Picture Settings – The Basics
When you buy a new flat screen today, its picture settings are usually pre-set straight from the factory, with a few different “modes” to choose from. Settings like dynamic contrast may give you an odd-looking image; overly turned up brightness and too bright colors can be another issue. These settings are primarily intended to make HDTVs look great on store shelves, but is often far from ideal settings for your living room. So pick up that remote control, bring up the picture settings and lets get started!

For starters, it is always better to start with a fairly neutral image, where color, contrast and lighting is fairly centered. Using this as a starting point, you can then move on to adjusting the settings individually. Here are some basic tips to get you started:
–>Turn down the brightness to around 50 percent and the contrast to around 80 percent and go from there. Details should appear in the dark parts of the image without having what’s supposed to be black look like charcoal. To make sure that that the black level is good, you can for example use a movie that doesn’t cover the entire screen, with black stripes on each side. This makes it much easier to adjust the real blacks.
–>Don’t set the sharpness on the flat screen to the maximum–that will invariably get more noise in the picture and decrease overall quality. A good rule of thumb is to turn up/down sharpness to a medium setting.
–>Follow the same procedure when adjusting the colors; start around 50 percent and adjust the color saturation so that no colors areĀ dominant. Actually, depending on the TV you may never have to go beyond 50 percent.
If you are picky about your picture quality and won’t settle for anything less than perfection, your best option is to buy a calibration disc on Blu-ray or DVD. With such a disc you can adjust the image by just following the step-by-step instructions.
